The light switch is symbolic in itself; on or off, in life or in darkness; it was ruminated on by Martin Creed with Work No. 227: The lights going on and off. But here I wanted to create observational studies: studies at differing times of the day: so capturing the fleeting movement of shadow and tone, in both daylight and then later in the yellowed artificial glow of night. Most importantly I wanted to recreate and consider the traces of our existence that are almost imperceptible: the smudges and smears that signify our presence; or absence. The fingerprints and marks of just being: of use and occupation.
To do this I used earth pigment, dust and oil as well as traditional oil pigments. I also resorted to painting with my hands and fingertips in an effort to relate something of our transient presence.
